Betsy Ross A biography. There is an interesting "Point/Counterpoint" account on who made the first flag, and it finds overwhelming support that Betsy Ross was the maker of the first flag. However, the Smithsonian Institution, in their web site above "Star Spangled Banner and the War of 1812" claims "Mrs. Mary Pickersgill of Baltimore, a maker of ship's banners and flags, manufactured the Star-Spangled Banner with assistance from her daughter, Mrs. Caroline Purdy..."
